Seeds for World Bee Day 2021

Celebrate World Bee Day 2021 with the United Nations on 20th May.  It is held on this date to honour the birth date of Anton Janša, the pioneer of modern beekeeping.

The fact that bees are dying at an alarming rate is a massive concern to the world’s population. There is no life without bees and the pollination services that bees naturally provide us with are invaluable. Without them, not only would honey supplies be down, but basic crops like apples would be threatened. Albert Einstein famously said that “if the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live”. 

The purpose of World Bee Day is to raise awareness of the importance of bees and beekeeping and inform the public of major beekeeping events around the world so that they can celebrate World Bee Day! Here at Buddy Burst, we are buzzing to help businesses and brands share the news with their customers, helping to not only raise awareness but actively give something back to the bees.

One of our favourite (and by far the most fun) ways to plant wildflowers is with our Seedballs. The tiny balls are made from a mixture of seeds, clay, peat-free compost, and chili powder, which create a protective casing against seed predators. To be planted, they simply need to be scattered on fertile soil, and nature will do the rest

Eco-Friendly Ways to Show Your Love This Valentine’s Day

What better time is there to celebrate love than during the Valentine’s season?  That being said, there is definitely a balance to strike in between the true purpose of Valentine’s Day – appreciating love and your loved ones – and showing that appreciation with gifts that won’t harm or pollute the Earth. We’re featuring a variety of products and ideas that merge the loving spirit of Valentine’s Day with products that you can feel good about – because they’re good for the Earth!   

But first, to fully appreciate Valentine’s Day, let’s delve into its origins, as reported by Britannica.com. The mid-February celebrations can actually be traced all of way back to the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which celebrated fertility, paired men off with women based on a lottery system. It wouldn’t be until the end of the 5th century when Christianity was in full-swing that Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. Naturally, Valentine was a popular name in the olden days, so nobody is quite sure just which acclaimed Valentine the day is named after. One version of the legend claims that a priest named Valentine signed a letter “from your Valentine” to a woman he had befriended and by some accounts, healed of her blindness.  Thus came the birth of Valentine’s cards! The other commonly accepted origin story is that a priest named Valentine married couples in secret against the orders of the emperor. The marriages were done to spare husbands from having to go off to war leaving their loved ones. Either theory is quite lovely, and supports why St. Valentine’s Day is associated with love.  

 So, now that we’ve had a bit of history lesson, let’s fast forward to the 2020s. As you know, the environment isn’t in a great place right now. Between climate change and the ever-growing plastic waste affecting our land and ocean environments, it’s important for each of us to do everything in our power to be more eco-friendly, and reduce the use of single-use plastics. While yes, most Valentine’s Day cards are paper rather than plastic, it still takes lots of energy to recycle paper. Plus, a lot of the paper cards outfitted with glitter and metallics actually are less likely to be recyclable. There are still material alternatives that are kinder to the Earth, and we’re pleased to share some of those with you.  

Growing Greetings Love Cards 

There’s nothing quite like a proper Valentine’s card that is sent via snail mail. While paper cards tend to be unsustainable, our Growing Greetings cards have a little something extra that makes them especially eco-friendly, and fantastic for direct mail campaigns. Every card contains a package of seeds that can grow into edible microgreens and are ready to eat in just 7-10 days. The cards can be printed with any design of your choice, and feature a hemp mat for the seeds to sow. We use only organic seeds and recycled materials to make these unique, eco-friendly greeting cards. After all, what says “I love you” more than fresh microgreens? 

 

Heart Seedsticks™ 

Our heart-shaped Seedsticks™ don’t just make the perfect Valentine’s greeting, but they double as a very long-lasting bouquet, as well. The Seedsticks are able to be planted to grow into whatever seed they are filled with. For an added love-themed touch, we recommend the use of our Nigella Love-In-A-Mist flower seeds. We also strive for all of our printing to be as green as possible, making a more eco-friendly product for you. Not only are our printers certified to ISO14001 environmental standard, but they are also certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).  

 

The Growbar

 

One of our newest products, the Growbar has all the fun of giving a sweet Valentine’s chocolatey treat with none of the calories! Growbars are styled to look like chocolate bars and although not edible straight out of the box; many varieties include edible plants! Every Growbar contains a themed seed collection within fertile coir bars. The bar just needs to be unwrapped, popped into a tray, and be watered. Within just 6-8 weeks, healthy seedlings will be growing,  and will be ready to plant in pots or in the garden. The coolest part? The Growbar is 100% eco-friendly, as the coir is made with coconut fibres a sustainable alternative to peat. The film wrap is recyclable, and made from sugar cane, which is 100% biodegradable. Even the card packaging is recyclable.

We carry a lovely product called Sprout Pencils contain a water-soluble seed capsule in place of an eraser. Then, once the pencil is through, just plant the pencil into some soil, then watch it grow into flowers, herbs or vegetables.

The pencils can be laser engraved (10cm x 0.5cm) with a custom logo or message. Customers can choose for their plantable capsule to contain vegetable, herb, or flower seeds. Hosting an outdoor event like a graduation, concert, or sports match? You never know what Mother Nature may have in store. As your mother always told you, it’s best to stay prepared. Sure, ponchos are tactful in keeping crowds dry, but all of that one-time-use plastic is pretty terrible for the environment.

Prevent plastic waste and show off your brand’s logo with our compostable corn starch ponchos, a product perfectly in line with the mission of the Evening Standard’s Plastic-Free Project. Interestingly enough, this initiative is being carried out in line with Bee Midtown, and is paving the way for Londoners to reduce their plastic use and ultimately make Midtown a zero waste area.

As for the ponchos themselves, it takes as little as 8-12 weeks for these ponchos to break down. Plus, they are completely non-toxic and CO2 neutral. As you may know, poppies became associated with Remembrance Day because once regrowth began to take place after World War I,  poppies were the first to bloom. Plastic Straw Alternatives

First off, if you haven’t heard, there have recently been massive developments in the fight against plastic straws. With 28,218 stores worldwide, Starbucks is one of the world’s largest fast food chains, and they’ve just promised to phase out plastic straws by 2020! Of course, this is great news for the amount of straws that will be saved at Starbucks shops alone. Even more notably, this decision is drawing massive attention to the issue of plastic straws all over.

Bio Straws For Your Brand

Straws – talk about a current hot-button topic!  Naturally, it’s a perfect time to show your customers how much you value the environment by replacing any and all of your straw needs with our biodegradable straws. These straws are made completely from PLA, a plant-based material with 67% less embodied carbon than oil-based PP plastic. Meanwhile, our white promotional straws are made from Ecovio, a compostable plant-based material with great properties. But, unlike paper straws, they won’t break down easily and cause complaints.

Our straws are designed for commercial composting together with food waste, where facilities exist. Custom-printed biodegradable straws are available from 5 mm to 10 mm in black, white with a green stripe or in clear biodegradable plastic. Additionally, customers can even choose a custom-printed wrapper to really boost a brand’s impact.

Sporty, Sustainable Fashion

In other news, Juventus recently revealed their third-kit design for the upcoming season created by Adidas designer Francesca Venturini . Interestingly, the jerseys are made from recycled plastic, and have been created in partnership with Parley for the Oceans.
